So, you think you're in the market for a new mattress? Well, you've got a few things you need to consider and you are probably getting prepared for walking into lots of furniture stores or taking a risk on a mattress in a box.
Our head bedroom professional Jill has provided 5 very important factors to consider when purchasing your new mattress that just might.
- What feel are you looking for?
If you've always slept on a soft mattress, remember that's what your body is used to. Going from a soft to firm mattress will take some time for your body to adjust to, no matter what any salesperson or specialist says. Be prepared for a few sleepless nights while your body gets used to a different feel! Ideally, seek the same feel you've always liked.
- Are you a co-sleeper?
If there's more than 1 person in the bed (in my case, 2 plus 2 toddlers!) there are some better options in regards to minimum partner disturbance. Try and look for a pocket spring system. These are individually pocketed coils that reduce the motion transfer between the springs, giving you and your partner 100% isolated sleeping areas. A must for the restless sleeper or late-night entry into bed!
- Are you a hot sleeper?
This can be a real concern for people who live in tropical climates, are going through menopause or simply get hot in bed. There are many options now that include gel, copper, or bamboo in the pillow tops that can help eliminate heat during sleep. Home Furniture, Bedding and Outdoor in Brisbane offer all of those options!
- What's your budget?
There is such a thing as spending too much on a mattress. As much as any salesperson will say "you can't put a price on a good night sleep", you actually can. There are many retailers out there that sell mattresses for $5,000, $10,000 even $20,000! Ask yourself this; do you need a Ferrari to get you a comfortable ride from point A to point Z? No, you don't, you can spend a lot less and get the exact same result, without the high end price tag.
- Is your bed frame worth more than the mattress?
We have theory... If you're willing to spend less on the mattress than you are on the bed frame, you're doing things the wrong way around! We'd prefer you spend more on the mattress and buy a cheaper bed frame! You spend a third of your life on a mattress, so make sure you're investing in the right area! (P.S, we don't mind if you buy an expensive bed AND an expensive mattress 😏)
